Thursday, 15 May, 2008 || the tiny town
We stopped here to get some food for a picnic lunch at Crater Lake. I figured there had to be at least one bakkal (general shop) in the town, and it was pretty easy to find, considering the town wasn't much more than this square. There were a couple of crowds of men, and after one of them told us the fruit-seller was closed, and so was bakkal number 1, we turned in the opposite direction and walked across the square to the only open shop. All the eyes of the village men were boring into us, four women walking wide-eyed through the deserted street. While Mom and I negotiated something edible for lunch in the sort of smelly, dark, damp shop, Linda attracted the attention of the women, kids, and goats just off from the square. We made our way back to the car with our sinfully cheap lunch of bread, sausage, cheese and apricot juice, and I must say I breathed a little sigh of relief as we left the town, although there had been absolutely no animosity toward us at all.
