The shops were closed, but many of the storefronts were adopted by people selling the ubiquitous Adidas and Nike clothes and shoes of the Istanbul pazars. We wandered into one of the little courtyard-hans, which was beautifully tranquil, two men drinking çay in one corner and a handful of the idiosyncratic tiny stools scattered around on the ground. Safe and sound - all is well from the bombings in Istanbul that struck while I was away, and the people in southeastern Turkey are nowhere near as menacing as the media would lead you to believe.
